Getting Ready for Paris

We are going to be doing a lot of walking in Paris. No problem for me! I already do a lot of walking on this metal beast. I have a daily goal of walking at least 10,000 steps a day (I wear a pedometer), and the treadmill helps me meet my quota.

I know, I know, French women don't exercise. They don't have to. They just walk everywhere! Unfortunately, I live in a U.S. suburb, not a city like Paris. And I work from home. My commute in the morning is out of bed, 10 steps to the bathroom, another 10 steps to the kitchen, and 10 steps to my desk. So I need a little help.

I DO walk the dog and take walks in the neighborhood all the time. But the treadmill helps me clock in a quick 10 minutes here and there, when the weather is bad - or a quick jog before my shower.

And I've already got my walking shoes. I'm ready to traipse through the streets of Paris and get my 10,000+ steps a day in one of the most magical and enchanting cities of the world. I can't wait!

Until Paris ...

P.S. It's only three months and 25 days away now!

Oh, that's one of the best parts of going to Paris -- being able to eat whatever you want because you know you're going to walk it off. And, trust me, you are going to want to eat A LOT. I defy anyone to resist those incredible boulangeries and patisseries.

My French trick is to repeat this:

"If I eat less, I won't have to work out so hard!"

Can anyone translate that into French for me???

My mom lost a whole pant size during our 10 day trip and we ate everything we could! She had to safety pin her pants to keep them from falling down. J'adore Paris!

Having just returned from this glorious city I can certainly agree with taking extra comfortable, extra roomy walking shoes with you. I didn't take into account how much my feet were going to swell as a result of the air-travel (despite flying business-class and having my feet up the whole time!). So, I resorted to buying a pair of moccassins whilst there. We walked everywhere and doing this was absolutely the best way to absorb as much of all the delights, both visual and gustatory, that Paris has to offer. Bon Voyage!

Ah, the anticipation ~ isn't it delicious?! I usually take at least 2 pair of good walking shoes and try to swap them each day. On a solo visit to Paris, I logged 19 miles on my pedometer in one day! The other days I averaged 11 miles.

No matter how hard I train for it, whenever I'm lucky enough to be in Paris I walk until my legs start to go numb! There's just so much to see and do.

From the BBC series on Paris, Blood and Chocolate (Part 2 of 3). Enjoy!
